I’ve changed my mind about the most important pillar

Hello Fellow Sages,

Most of you know I wrote a book, The Vibrant Sage: Arousing Energy for Health and Happiness, built around five foundational pillars for vibrant living after 50:

breath
movement
nutrition
sleep
purpose

And for years, when someone asked me which pillar matters most… my answer was usually: it depends.

Sometimes the answer was breath.
Sometimes purpose.

Breath and purpose have always felt like the bookends to me—
breath means we are alive and able to offer our gifts to the world plus we can control our breath…
and purpose gives us a reason to rise and meet the day.

But after more reflection, more lived experience, and more conversations…

I’ve changed my mind.

šŸ’¤ Sleep may be the most important pillar of all.

Agree? Disagree?

Here’s why…

Sleep debt is real.

Research shows that after just two poor nights of sleep, your reaction time while driving can resemble someone under the influence of alcohol. Wild, right?

And over time, poor sleep impacts everything:

mood
immunity
cognition
hormones
willpower
energy
decision-making

Which means if you’re not sleeping well… everything gets harder.

Including the choices that support your health.

If you’re exhausted, how likely are you to:
take the walk
make the better meal
have the patience
stay clear-headed
choose what actually supports you?

Exactly.

And this isn’t just theory for me.

In my mid-30s, doctors were evaluating me for Multiple Sclerosis .

Blurred vision.
A slight facial droop.
Tingling in my hands and feet.

Thankfully, it wasn’t MS.

It was chronic stress.

But that season taught me something I’ve never forgotten:

A good nights sleep is not optional.
It is essential.

To this day, one poor night of sleep can throw everything off. If I sleep badly, I can feel it in my mood, my focus, and honestly… my entire day becomes one long countdown until bedtime.

And while I’d love to say sleep gets easier with age…

most of us know that’s not exactly how it works.

Which is why I’ve become more intentional about paying attention.

Not just how I felt in the morning but using technology.

I’ve never been someone who loved tracking fitness numbers.

Part of me resisted it because I didn’t want to become obsessed with the numbers—and obsession isn’t wellness either.

But over time, the Oura ring has become one of the few tools I genuinely appreciate.

Not because it tells me how to live.

But because it helps me pay attention.

It gives me insight into how I slept, how I recovered, and how my habits are quietly shaping how I feel.

Not perfectly.
Not obsessively.
Just with more awareness.

And that pause—
that reflection—
has helped me build better habits and better sleep.

I wrote more about that in my latest blog:

Because better sleep creates better energy.

Better energy makes better choices easier.

And often, vibrant health is not built through willpower.

It’s built through better recovery.

And because better recovery makes better choices easier…

one of the simplest things helping me lately is keeping a healthy, easy and nourishing snack on hand for busy days or those low-energy afternoon slumps.

Lately, that’s been these no-bake chocolate peanut butter protein bars.

Simple to make.

Genuinely delicious.

And just indulgent enough to feel like a treat.

(If you love peanut butter cups, you’re welcome.)

Hello Fellow Sages, Happy Spring… (ok, I know it officially started a while ago—but I’m still celebrating it 😊) There’s something about this time of year. The longer days. The warmth of the sun. The quiet return of color—from daffodils to cherry blossoms. Even here in South Florida, where we don’t experience winter in quite the same way, there’s still a shift. A soft unfolding. And it got me thinking… What if we’re not so different from those flowers? Winter is a time of quiet reflection; for...

In Quiet Reflection We Connect With Our True Nature

Hello My Fellow Sages There’s something about this time of year… The light feels different. The days stretch a little longer. And without even realizing it… we begin to look forward to what’s ahead. It reminds me of being younger… Those final weeks of school. Counting down the days. Knowing something was coming— more time outside… more freedom… more fun… more life. We didn’t need a reason. We just felt it. And maybe that’s what I’m noticing now… That same feeling is still there. Just quieter....
